Growing Awareness: Movember and the fight against prostate cancer

Movember: Growing Awareness

Each November, moustaches take centre stage for Movember, a global movement where men grow facial hair to raise awareness and funds for men’s health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer, mental health and suicide.

The moustache is more than a symbol; it’s a conversation starter that sparks important dialogue and empowers men to take control of their health. It is common for men to avoid visiting the doctor, ignore symptoms, or not know what to look out for.

Men’s health facts

  • 1 in 5 men will die before the age of 65
  • Suicide is the leading cause of death in men under 50, and men are 3 times more likely to die from suicide than women
  • 75% of all premature deaths (before age 75) are in men
  • Two-thirds of all deaths due to cardiovascular causes are in men
  • Testicular cancer is the most common cancer in males aged 15-35

The hard facts on prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men, particularly those over 50.

  • 1 in 8 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
  • The risk is higher in black men and those with a family history of prostate cancer.
  • When detected early, prostate cancer is treatable, with high survival rates.

Symptoms to watch for

Prostate cancer often has no early symptoms. As it progresses, symptoms may include:

  • Difficulty urinating
  • Frequent urination, especially at night
  • Painful urination or ejaculation
  • Blood in urine or semen
  • Lower back or pelvic pain
  • Unexplained weight loss and fatigue

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms or are over 50, please talk to your GP.

What employers can do this Movember

The workplace, where many men spend the majority of their time, offers a unique opportunity to tackle these statistics head-on. Occupational health teams and employers can help create environments where men feel supported and empowered to take action early. Some practical tips for Movember could include:

  • Hosting a ‘Moustache Day’ to spark conversation and raise funds.
  • Encourage participation in Movember’s 60km challenge—1km for each man lost to suicide every hour worldwide.
  • Invite occupational health professionals to run men’s health check-ins or drop-in sessions.
  • Distribute resources on prostate & testicular cancer, mental health, and support services, such as an Employee Assistance Programme and advice around alcohol and stopping smoking.
  • Assigning a ‘Men’s Health Champion’  for peer support in the workplace.
  • Having healthy food options available within the workplace.
  • Review your policies around mental health, stress management, and flexible working.
